Hello from the admins of #TheArtOfManipulation! We would really like to revive the mentoring aspect of our group and we are going to start by having a Collaboration Contest.

How it Will Work
For this contest, two or more artists must team up and collaborate to create an entry. One artist must be at the intermediate/expert level and the other must be a beginner. We (the admins) will decide which class you fall into and assign participants into teams (requests will be considered if there is a specific person with whom you want to partner). We hope that this contest will create new friendships and allow beginning photomanipulators to learn something new

Manip Challenges #001If you've been on dA for a while, you may remember the manip challenges I used to run. The original manip challenges were chat based 2 hour challenges, but as I don't have that kind of time any more (the event would be all day long, with 3 to 5 challenges in succession), I decided to adapt them to be two weeks long and not in a chatroom instead.

After a bit of ado, we are happy to introduce some new challenges that we hope will inspire some more creativity in our community as well as encourage ALL of us (ourselves included) to learn some new skills and expand our repertoire!

For these challenges, we will require the use of one piece of stock that, while lovely and very useful, might typically be considered "overused," and one new skill or technique.
We know there are a lot of challenges out there already, but here are the goals for ours:

To address concerns of "copying" and "lack of creativity" by challenging people to think more creatively about their art,

To help members of our community learn more and expand their skills by challenging them to learn new techniques, and

To maintain the focus of our community on art, growth, and support.

So! For those of you who may not have been paying attention lately, today (August 7th) is deviantART's 12th birthday! To celebrate, we held a Stock Challenge chat session earlier today. Now, it's time to MANIP THAT STOCK!

This may sound abstract at first, but to keep the theme as open as possible, I choose a rather abstract title. There are many directions in which you can go. You could choose an anthropomorphic direction, where you breathe life into letters and give them human or other animate characteristics. Another route would be to create the letters out of living objects, such as plants or animals.
Which direction you choose, maybe even a third or fourth one, does not matter. What matters is that your letters are brought to life!
What kind of letters you bring to life, words, glyphs or sentences, is 100% up to you. I wanted to do this last weekend, but ended up doing everything but this But here they finally are: our third edition of the Manip Challenges! I hope there will be as much participation as last time (though I have to admit, reaching over 30 entries in the middle of the vacation period might be a bit optimistic - I suppose you've been spoiling me so far ) In any case, it's about having a challenge and not about breaking any participation records, so let's just get it on I can't wait to see all your gorgeous entries!

Your entry has to be uploaded to dA and submitted to #Photomanipulated's Manip Challenges folder (you need to be a member for that - everyone is welcome to join, just click the "join" button on the left side of the group's front page!) before the deadline specified below.
All stock used has to be credited properly and it has to be legitimate stock to begin with.
