On Fire by kuschelirmel On Fire by kuschelirmel
This started as me being in a bad mood on Wednesday. And how better to blow some steam off than to set something on fire?! Well, in this case it's a someone, and she seems immune to the flames. Might be her crown generating coolness or her posessing some kind of magic, but whatever it is, she's wearing the flames without getting burned. It's what I think I should do at work more often... or maybe I'm just overinterpreting and this is just some fun lighting practice. You decide ;)

What do you make of this?

I'm submitting this with critiques turned on because it took me waaaaay longer than I thought to get her arms and face approximately right. I think there's still things that are off, but I've stared at it for three evenings and I'm kinda happy now (if not completely) so I decided I'd ask you guys instead of going nuts over every individual stroke ^^; So fire away :D

Stock from ~La-Esmeralda-Stock (girl) as well as ~Ayelie-stock & ~Mind-Matter (fire) and my own background shot on holidays in Firenze 2009... I have so much stock unuploaded from that vacation it actuall makes me queesy --> my stock can be found on *kuschelirmel-stock but NOT HERE!

My art is not your stock! so hands off!

First impressions, beautiful, well lit, excellent use of the fire effects, your technique and skills have mastered something which has proven time and again to be a difficult element to recreate!

Things that really caught my eye were the tiny fire sparks which so many people often forget when they are using fire in their images. You can tell, as with all your manips that you've really taken time over this to get it right without even needing to read the details in your description :)

There are 2 points on closer examination of this that I keep going back to and looking over again. Her hair does not reflect the flames at all, despite everything else being beautifully bathed in the glow. Even with the light from the crown being blue, her hair would shine with both colours, and without those highlights its creating a kinda, "dead" area of impact around her face.
The second niggle in the same area is the background lighting, again, love that the upper parts of the arch are reflecting the blue of the crown, but as with the bottom half of the bg, there should still be some soft orange hues to just mark out some of the highlight areas.

I know that contrasting colours are very popular, but I think in this particular piece, the over all impact would be much better if you followed the fires glow into the upper regions of the scene, using the soft blue glow from the crown as an accent rather than the contrast if I'm making sense :D

What I love: The way you used the fire is excellently placed. I especially love the embers around the fire. The stock you chose is a great one as well.

I also tell you this all the time, I love how you use color, tones, gradients and the separation of color here works well.

Now, there's a lot of fire but none of it is reflected in her hair or her lower face. I also don't know if that's a crown or an apple on her head, I love the glow of it and placement, but I'm not sure what it is.

The face is a little too dark for all this fire even if it is below her. And her skin seems blotchy. I would have lightened the make-up a little also, it seems a bit severe if fire is the subject matter.

Overall, I LOVE THIS PIECE! I love the concept and the execution of it.

It rocks :D

The realism of your shadings make it hard not to be inspired, but your art is awesome on a whole :)
