I have a Nikon D90 (with the 18 - 105 mm lense), so it's a DSLR, but still not a professional one. I was lucky they had those lights up everywhere and because it was raining outside there were not too many people there that could bump into me while I was trying to hold the camera steady for the longer shutter time (there are no tripods allowed inside). In cases like this I always make multiple photos in rapid succession in the hopes that one in the series is sharp. It's certainly not something you can do with a simple point-and-shoot, simply because their sensors are usually not that sensitive and the lenses are cheaper, too. But with a tripod and a bit of patience I think you could do it with a cheaper camera, too (you'd just have to creatively use the picture settings available) - maybe the pictures wouldn't be just as crisp, but at least they wouldn't be blurry.
Yeah I had a very cheap camera-, between the dim lighting, all the people and my camera, all my pictures came out blurry. =/
